The recent Quantum Education Summit 2025 in Barcelona brought together global leaders in science education to explore how to make quantum technologies accessible to all. From introductory sessions exploring the basics for beginners to taking deep dives into quantum developments, the Summit emphasised the importance of making quantum technology inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Representing OQI, Martin Gastal (OQI Partnerships and Capacity Building Lead) contributed to discussions through giving a talk on widening access to quantum technologies through collaborative initiatives – showcasing OQI as an example. His talk highlighted how OQI’s quantum computing hackathons have evolved into a central platform for a range of complementary capacity building initiatives, including internships and mentorship opportunities for participants. Martin outlined the goal of our capacity building activities: to ensure that hackathons are not just one-time events, but instead that they are a centrepiece of a wider global educational programme, acting as an entry point for students worldwide, in particular in the Global South, to collaborate and innovate.
At OQI, we are continuing to drive capacity building efforts into 2026, with a developing pipeline of quantum computing hackathons, Quantum Diplomacy Games and regional events taking place around the world.
