OQI recently participated in World of Quantum, which took place in Munich from 22-25 June, to explore the potential of quantum technology and its real-world applications and impact.
Enrica Porcari, Head of CERN IT Department and Strategic Advisor to OQI, gave a talk introducing OQI’s mission and our work towards advancing quantum computing for the benefit of society and ensuring the technology is developed responsibly and equitably.
Highlighting the importance of moving from ideas to impact, Enrica placed emphasis on the need to create global frameworks for the ethical and inclusive governance of quantum technologies. She shared some of OQI’s core activities, such as supporting the development of quantum computing applications to address real-world challenges and accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She also explored our global capacity building efforts, particularly in regions with limited access to quantum infrastructure and training, through a range of educational activities – including hackathons, the Quantum Diplomacy Game and regional events played across multiple continents.
During her talk, she highlighted how OQI, hosted at CERN during its pilot phase (2024-2026), builds on CERN’s principles of open science and international collaboration – bringing together research, diplomacy, private sector and philanthropy stakeholders to shape how the technology will be used.
Reflecting on the broader discussions throughout the event, Enrica closed with a key message: “It’s important that we look beyond headlines or hype and instead talk concretely about what it will take to turn quantum potential into impact and how we can shape the future of quantum technology together.”
At World of Quantum, Enrica was not the only one representing OQI. Marianne Schoerling (OQI Quantum Diplomacy Capacity Building) also shared her insights on building global capacity and ensuring equitable access to quantum technologies. During the session, she emphasised the importance of anticipation in building capacity and shaping the effective global governance of the technology. She also reinforced the necessity of collaboration, identifying how inclusive engagement across academia, industry and government is key to mitigating the global digital divide.
