From 30 July to 1 August, the first-ever Quantum Information, Science and Technology Conference (QISTCon.ph) took place in Cebu, the Philippines.
Organised by the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines, the event had strong regional support and engagement, bringing together experts, researchers, industry and the community. The conference explored a range of topics, including the technical advancements, to the real-world applications, educational initiatives and ethical and policy considerations needed for developing a responsible quantum ecosystem.
OQI’s contribution at QISTCon.ph
OQI played an active role in helping to shape the conference programme, with Dr. Marianne Schoerling (Strategic Advisor to OQI and Senior Programme Manager at GESDA) leading the Quantum Diplomacy Game – an interactive role play game that simulates the challenges and opportunities of quantum computing for the common good in a fictional future scenario. Designed to promote science diplomacy, the game aims to raise awareness and anticipation of the geopolitical implications of quantum computing as an emerging technology.
OQI community members, Zeki Can Seskir (Researcher at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany), Elias X. Huber (Quantum Computing Researcher at CQT Singapore), Dr. Angelina Frank (QAI Ventures), and their colleague Clara Yun Fontaine (Ph.D Student in the Centre for Quantum Technologies at NUS), facilitated three parallel groups during the game.
Marianne also gave a talk emphasising how responsible quantum and science anticipation must go hand in hand to ensure inclusive and equitable access, highlighting QISTCon.ph as a key platform for both regional and international dialogue on initiatives that help to advance this goal.
Key insights from QISTCon.ph
From presenting the country’s first quantum computer, to exploring a regional roadmap for future collaborations, QISTCon.ph was an opportunity to showcase and discuss key insights in the Philippines’ quantum journey, in particular:
- Partnering with regional science and technology conferences in underserved geographies is a powerful way to expand global reach and promote responsible tech development with equitable access.
- Positioning such events as an ecosystem builder, linking grassroot efforts with leading institutions.
- Identifying a future roadmap, including the OQI-supported SEA Hackathon which took place shortly after the conference, to ensure a continued momentum and ongoing ASEAN-wide collaboration.
At OQI, we are looking forward to supporting similar initiatives and contributing to strengthening global quantum ecosystems. Reflecting on the success and learnings of the conference, Marianne shared her thoughts:
“QISTCon.ph was a landmark moment for strengthening the quantum ecosystem in the ASEAN region. It clearly demonstrated that engaging with anticipated scientific breakthroughs like quantum is not a luxury, but a strategic imperative to ensure inclusive and equitable benefits for all nations.”
