OQI highlights anticipatory approach to quantum computing at 2025 Science Diplomacy Summit

The 2025 Science Diplomacy Summit took place from 14-15 April, hosted by the John Hopkins Science Diplomacy Hub in Washington D.C. The Summit brought together stakeholders from 35 countries, including the Open Quantum Institute, to discuss critical challenges currently facing the scientific community–exploring topics such as climate change innovation,  artificial intelligence, health, and quantum technology. 

 

Tim Smith, Coordinator of OQI, participated in the breakout session on Quantum Information Science and Technology—presenting OQI as a novel science diplomacy instrument, offering a neutral platform for international collaboration between research, diplomacy, private sector and philanthropy stakeholders. 

 

Tim emphasised key areas of OQI’s work towards developing quantum computing for society, highlighting in particular:

  • Our anticipatory approach to shaping the global quantum computing landscape–through identifying opportunities for SDG-focused use cases. 
  • Accelerating dialogue between science, diplomacy, philanthropy and society–through offering open-source educational resources and creating opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
  • Translating opportunities into action–using quantum technologies as tools for equitable innovation rather than instruments of division.

Through fostering international collaboration and promoting multistakeholder dialogue, OQI continues to work towards ensuring that quantum computing is developed equitably and for the benefit of society.
