OQI at COP30: connecting quantum and sustainability in LATAM

4th December 2025

The 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) took place in Belém, Brazil, from 10-21 November 2025, where the world came together to define and agree on global actions to address the climate crisis.

Alongside the main proceedings, a workshop focusing on quantum and sustainability took place at the IBM offices in São Paulo, co-organised by Venturus, Institut Quantique, IBM and OQI. With 45 in-person participants and over 20 attending online, the workshop sparked a range of discussions and an exchange of ideas, bringing together the quantum and sustainability communities across Brazil and Latin and South America.

The workshop aimed to explore the role of emerging technologies, such as quantum, in addressing climate-related global challenges – highlighting examples such as environmental monitoring in the Amazon and weather forecasting in São Paulo and emphasising the importance of global collaboration.

Alongside the workshop, OQI participated in a series of panel discussions exploring the potential of quantum computing on mitigating climate impact and promoting the need of global climate governance.

Leading up to COP30, OQI has contributed towards amplifying ongoing initiatives at the intersection of quantum and sustainability across Brazil and the wider LATAM region. This includes supporting use case teams in Latin and South America working to address real-world challenges aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as the use case Plant Genomics, in collaboration with Venturus, and the OQI-supported Quantum Hackathon LATAM in Uruguay at the University of Montevideo.

The workshop in São Paulo represents another milestone in bringing together diverse voices and perspectives from across the LATAM regions, and at OQI we look forward to continuing these collaborations and advancing the global conversation on quantum for sustainability!
