Elias Xaver Huber, winner of the 2023 NYUAD Hackathon for Social Good, recently represented the Open Quantum Institute at the International Symposium on Grids and Clouds (ISGC) 2025–exploring how we can ensure the advancement in quantum technologies is inclusive, secure and beneficial to humanity.
During his presentation at the ISGC, Elias showcased OQI’s collaborative approach, bringing together academia, industry, diplomacy and education. His talk highlighted some of our key pillars of work–from advancing capacity building initiatives, such as the OQI Hackathon in a Box and Quantum Diplomacy Game, to our work towards developing quantum computing use cases to tackle real-world global challenges and accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The ISGC, now in its 22nd year of running, began as a conference on grid computing, bringing together supercomputing experts and researchers leveraging computational resources. The 2025 edition placed a strong emphasis on AI and quantum computing–reflecting the global focus on developing these technologies and their potential application and impact.
“It struck me during a session on federated management of research infrastructure, how well many of the existing practices of grid computing align with the OQI’s vision for global and inclusive access to quantum computing,” explained Elias, reflecting on his experience at the ISGC. “I had the privilege to present the vision and work of OQI to an audience of infrastructure managers—some exploring integrations with quantum computers—and compute-demanding scientists. I received many questions about OQI’s use cases and capacity building activities, especially in South-East Asia, and discussions centered around the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions. It was a pleasure to represent OQI and I really enjoyed the warm hospitality–and excellent food—in Taipei!”
Elias is currently finishing his Master’s in China Studies at the Yenching Academy of Peking University, where his research centered on China’s quantum ecosystem and international competition and collaboration in quantum technologies.
