News from the Lab: OQI advances global collaboration in quantum computing for the SDGs

October 2025

In a recent session of News from the Lab, a series of online events organised by the CERN Alumni Network  Alex Bernasconi (Applications Project Manager at OQI) spoke about her work with the Open Quantum Institute, exploring how we are promoting inclusive access to quantum computing to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session was moderated by Paweł Gora, CERN alumnus and active member of OQI’s community.

Alex explored OQI’s four main pillars of work, highlighting our efforts in:

  • Developing quantum computing use cases aiming to address global challenges and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs
  • Fostering industry collaborations for equitable access to quantum computing
  • Capacity building activities such as hackathons, the Quantum Diplomacy Game and regional events worldwide
  • Shaping the multilateral governance of the technology before it is available

During the session, Alex presented some examples of use cases currently being developed by OQI, exploring the development phases use cases go through, from ideation to implementation on quantum processors.

In a similar fashion to the CERN Alumni Network, at OQI we have developed our own community platform, where members of our community from around the world can network with like-minded individuals, get regular updates, attend events and access resources. If you’ve not already joined our community, you can find out how to take part on our platform: https://oqi.hivebrite.com/
