OQI’s contribution to the 2025 G7 summit: shaping the global governance of quantum technology for sustainable development
17th June 2025

Today marks the end of the 2025 G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, which brought together global leaders to advance dialogue on global challenges such as climate change, technology and innovation and health.
At OQI, we contributed to the Summit’s briefing publication – initially shared with participants during the Summit and now available online – to showcase how we are shaping the global governance of quantum technology for sustainable development and to explore some of the critical questions shaping the emerging technology.
Tim Smith, coordinator of OQI, examined how multilateral cooperation, scientific collaboration and a focus on the SDGs can help guide the development and ethical governance of quantum technology, addressing several key areas:
- Understanding the opportunities and risks that quantum technology poses for advancing the SDGs.
- Practical applications of quantum computing, including OQI’s work to support the development of SDG-focused use cases.
- Exploring progress in the governance of quantum computing, and OQI’s anticipatory approach to developing ethical guidelines for the emerging technology.
- Highlighting the necessity of international collaboration, shown through our multistakeholder approach that brings together research, diplomacy, industry and philanthropy.
Held during the International Year of Quantum (IYQ), the 2025 G7 Summit marks a defining opportunity for global leaders to advance sustainable and inclusive quantum innovation, to ensure it is developed for the benefit of all.
