Exploring the future of quantum computing: Quantum Diplomacy Game played at World Bank

On 17th June, the Quantum Diplomacy Game was played during a quantum diplomacy event at the World Bank in Washington D.C.
The game immerses participants into a future fictional scenario, where large-scale quantum computing has been achieved, but the technology is inaccessible for most. Each participant is given a character, taking on the role of scientists, policymakers and industry leaders. Placing multilateral governance at the forefront, the game aims to raise awareness and anticipation of the geopolitical implications of quantum computing as an emerging technology.
Following the Quantum Diplomacy Game, Marieke Hood (OQI Advisory Committee Co-Chair) and Catherine Lefebvre (Applications Lead and Senior Advisor at OQI) presented OQI’s methodology for developing quantum computing use cases aiming to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Several of OQI’s use case teams presented their work, demonstrating how quantum computing algorithms could be developed to tackle real-world challenges. The presenting use cases include:
- Plant Genomics – using quantum computing to improve crop yield through targeted gene editing, addressing SDG2 (Zero Hunger)
- Accelerating Novel Antimicrobial Discovery – using quantum simulation and quantum machine learning to accelerate new drug discovery, addressing SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing)
- Water Leak Detection – using quantum machine learning to optimally position sensors for detecting water leaks in urban water systems, addressing SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
- Layout of Turbines in a Wind Farm – using quantum optimisation to efficiently layout turbines in a wind farm to maximise the power produced, addressing SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy)
