OQI discusses quantum applications for sustainability at QDNL webinar

On 4th March 2025, OQI Applications Expert Philipp Kammerlander represented OQI in a webinar on Quantum Applications for the Green Transition, organised by Quantum Delta NL. Run as part of their innovation and policy dialogue series, the webinar brought together key representatives of the European Commission and industry leaders, and focused on discussions around the regulatory landscape, identifying potential barriers and exploring incentives to drive technological innovation and investment.

Philipp shared insights from OQI, outlining examples from our portfolio of use cases addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address real-world global challenges, presenting one of our use cases on wind farm layout optimisation as an example.

Discussions between policymakers, energy industry leaders and quantum experts on energy applications of quantum technologies will help inform the European Commission’s expected Quantum Strategy, while also highlighting collaboration with initiatives such as OQI in promoting access to quantum computing and its applications in the energy sector.

The Open Quantum Institute (OQI) is a multilateral governance initiative that promotes global and inclusive access to quantum computing and the development of applications for the benefit of humanity. As a novel science diplomacy instrument, it brings together research, diplomacy, private sector and philanthropy stakeholders. OQI is hosted by CERN during its pilot phase (2024-2026).

Mission:

• Accelerating applications for humanity: Realising the full potential of quantum computing to have the widest possible societal impact by accelerating the development of use cases geared towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and succeeding framework , thanks to the combined forces of researchers, developers and entrepreneurs from academia and private sector as well as the United Nations, and large NGOs
• Access for all: Providing global, inclusive and equitable access to a pool of public and private quantum computers and simulators available via the cloud
