Yesterday, the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) participated in the International Quantum Forum 2025 held at TUM Think Tank, presenting our Quantum Diplomacy Game and participating in a panel discussion underscoring the importance of science diplomacy.
The International Quantum Forum (IQF), taking place 30 – 31 January 2025, brought together key stakeholders from across the global quantum technology ecosystem—spanning academia, industry and civil society. Within the scope of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQST) throughout 2025, the IQF sets the tone—blending together quantum science and art through the exploration of quantum advancements and the societal and economic dimensions of innovation.
OQI’s Quantum Diplomacy Game is an interactive role play game that brings the challenges and opportunities of quantum computing to life in a fictional future scenario. Designed to promote science diplomacy, the game aims to raise awareness of the geopolitical implications of quantum computing as an emerging technology.
OQI capacity building lead Marianne Schoerling took part in a panel discussion centered around science diplomacy, together with Joe Niemela (UNESCO), Marga Gual Soler (GESDA) and Nicole Manger (Federal Agency). During the engaging fireside chat, panelists reflected on the results of the Quantum Diplomacy game and explored the challenges we face within science diplomacy today and in the future.
Questions were raised about how we can ensure equitable access to quantum technologies, leading to examine how we can mitigate the risk of amplifying a future digital divide. Panelists explored the potential of harnessing science and technology to accelerate sustainable development, and highlighted the importance of policymakers to anticipate the impact of scientific and technological breakthroughs on society before they are upon us.
The Quantum Diplomacy Game is played around the world across several continents throughout the International Year of Quantum in 2025. Find out more about the game and how you can get involved!
